Day 34–London

 This day was very hot in London. We all stayed close to home and took it easy. Donnie found a grocery store nearby and did some minimal shopping; then, he cooked delicious meals for us throughout the day. 

In the late afternoon, we got into an Uber and took an hour ride to see “The Lion King” at the Lyceum theater. Donnie and Gracelyn and I have seen it in Arizona, but Elise and Andy had never seen it. Donnie purchased second row seats for us, and they did not disappoint. The theater was gorgeous and small.

This production was absolutely breathtaking. Every song was perfect. The puppetry was magical. Honestly we couldn’t get over it. Such a perfect ending to our trip.

Day 1 and 2--London

  If you just want to see pictures, scroll down! After a 10 hour flight, we were so happy to land in London. Our AirBnB is in the Notting Hill neighborhood. It is a wonderful location, with a tube station 10 mins away and a Tesco express around the corner. We had dinner at an authentic fish and chips shop on our arrival day. We all slept soundly, but the girls woke up with terrible back pain from their tiny, thin mattress.  On our first full day, we had an absolutely wonderful breakfast on Portobello Road. The waitress was very nice and answered every question Donnie threw at her with warmth. The rest of the day, we walked around Notting Hill trying to find a cushy mattress pad for the girls’ bed. We were treated to absolutely gorgeous weather, and  we got to see so many beautiful gardens and examples of housing. We finally had success in our quest at the nearby mall, and Donnie carried the large box with a king sized mattress pad on his back for a 25 minute walk. Always ...

Day 26--Amsterdam (Rick Steves walk)

 Our trip would be so much less enjoyable and manageable without our new bestie Rick Steves.  I remember seeing Rick Steves travel shows on PBS as a young adult. I literally never thought they would apply to my life. Leading up to our trip, I watched every video and purchased every book I could. But I have found his free audio app to be the most useful resource of all. He offers an audio walking tour through the “spine” of Amsterdam that we decided to take our first day. It’s designed to be two hours…I think we did it in about four.  Amsterdam is such a cool city. Everywhere we went, there was so much more to take in than whatever landmark Rick was talking about. It didn’t feel insanely touristy, aside from the crowds of people. The weather was gorgeous and overcast—such a welcome change from the heat and humidity of Switzerland and Germany!  The walk began at the main train station. Day 4--London

We were exhausted from the day before, so we had a leisurely breakfast and decided to explore the weekend Portobello Road market. Unfortunately, the day was much warmer than other days had been, and the market was a 30 minute walk away. We sweated our way through the stalls and the crowds. We had lunch at our new favorite spot, Bluebelles. Our family is learning to deeply appreciate the luxury of ordering free, delicious tap water at restaurants. Portobello was the absolute largest outdoor market I’ve ever seen. It seemed to go on forever. Walking through the food stalls alone was like taking a trip around the world.
