Day 7--Paris (Palace of Versailles)
Today we had a scheduled, previously purchased early morning tour of the Palace of Versailles. When the alarm went off at 6am, I was deeply regretting my decision to book this excursion for our first full day in Paris. But off we went, with a whopping 4 hours of sleep on board. Happily, the day went beautifully and the early start was well worth it.
We booked this tour through Viator ages ago in order to avoid lines and minimize intimidation. This morning, I reviewed the booking again and was momentarily horrified by the price. However, our guide Wei was worth every penny. We seamlessly rode the train to Versailles with 20 other people. Upon arrival, we were given the neatest little radio transmitters that allowed us to hear Wei directly in our ears (but he couldn’t hear us). I loved not having to miss a word of his amazing commentary.
Because we arrived so early, we were treated to a virtual private tour of the palace. There were no crowds at all until the very end! This alone made the tour for me. Crowding has been our biggest hurdle since arriving in Europe.
I have seen so many pictures of Versailles online, so I thought I knew what to expect. Once again, I was surprised. Being in the physical space, especially in relative privacy, was magical. I didn’t distract myself with taking pictures. Luckily, sweet Donnie is fully dedicated to documenting our trip. I will drop my favorite shots below.
After the tour, we were able to walk through a part of the massive Gardens of Versailles. Although our feet and legs were tired, this was also an experience I wouldn’t trade.
Later on, we walked a while and found an Italian eatery, where we once again experienced culinary bliss. French food definitely does not disappoint! After a lengthy train ride back to our flat, we went for the first time to the bakery/patisserie that is literally next door. This was a dangerous discovery, as the treats are not only beautiful and tasty, but also reasonably priced. Good thing we are walking multiple miles each day!
This is literally steps from the front door of our flat. So glad we spend half our days walking, because I want to try as many as possible before we leave Paris.
